Canada Day: The History and Celebrations of July 1st

Learn about Canada Day, why it is celebrated on July 1st, and the traditions that mark this important national holiday.

July 1 is Canada Day — the national holiday celebrating the anniversary of Confederation. It is the most widely celebrated day in the Canadian calendar and a topic that appears on the citizenship test.

Why July 1?

On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act came into effect, creating the Dominion of Canada by uniting four colonies: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. This event is known as Confederation.

Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister, and Ottawa was the capital of the new nation.

The Name

Canada Day was not always called "Canada Day":

  • 1867-1879: The anniversary was informally celebrated
  • 1879-1982: Called "Dominion Day"
  • 1982: Renamed "Canada Day" when the Constitution was patriated
