Canadian Citizenship Test vs. IELTS — How Do They Compare?

A comparison of the Canadian citizenship test and the IELTS language test. What to expect from each.

Many applicants confuse the citizenship test with the language test (IELTS/CELPIP). Here is how they compare.

The Citizenship Test

  • Purpose: Tests your knowledge of Canada
  • Format: 20 multiple-choice questions
  • Time: 30 minutes
  • Passing score: 75% (15/20)
  • Content: Canadian history, government, rights, symbols, geography
  • Language: English or French (your choice)
  • Study material: Discover Canada study guide
  • IELTS/CELPIP Language Test

  • Purpose: Tests your English language proficiency
  • Format: Listening, reading, writing, and speaking sections
  • Time: About 3 hours
  • Required score: CLB 4 (equivalent to IELTS 4.0)
  • Content: General English comprehension and communication
  • Language: English only (TEF/TCF for French)
  • Study material: English language learning resources
  • Key Differences

The citizenship test requires you to know specific facts about Canada. The language test requires you to demonstrate you can communicate in English or French. They are completely different tests with different preparation strategies.

    Do I Need Both?

Applicants aged 18-54 need to pass both the language test (as part of the application) and the citizenship test (after the application is processed). Applicants 55 and older are exempt from both.
