What's the Passing Score for the Canadian Citizenship Test?

By Citizenship Test Editorial Team·9 min read·Updated 2026-05-15

You need 75% (15 out of 20 questions) to pass the Canadian citizenship test. Here's everything about scoring.

You need to answer 15 out of 20 questions correctly to pass the Canadian citizenship test. That's a 75% passing score.

What Does 75% Mean in Practice?

It means you can get 5 questions wrong and still pass. That's a generous margin. If you've studied the Discover Canada guide and taken practice tests, 5 wrong answers gives you plenty of room.

Is 75% Easy to Achieve?

For most prepared test-takers, yes. The questions are factual and straightforward — they test whether you've read the guide, not whether you can solve complex problems. The ~87% pass rate reflects this.

Should I Aim Higher Than 75%?

Yes. Aim for at least 85% on practice tests. This gives you a safety buffer for test-day nerves. If you're consistently hitting 17–18 on practice tests, you'll be fine.

What If I Score Exactly 75%?

A score of 15/20 is a full pass. You'll proceed to the citizenship ceremony.

What If I Score Below 75%?

You'll receive a letter from IRCC. In most cases, you'll be invited to retake the test. If you fail a second time, you may be scheduled for an interview with a citizenship judge.
