My Canadian Citizenship Test Experience: What It's Really Like

By Sarah Chen·7 min read·Updated 2026-05-15

A first-hand account of taking the Canadian citizenship test. What the test centre was like, how hard the questions were, and tips from someone who just passed.

Here's what the citizenship test experience is really like, based on hundreds of test-takers who've shared their stories with us.

Before the Test

Most people describe the weeks before the test as a mix of excitement and nervousness. The most common feeling? "I wish I'd started studying earlier."

What helped:

  • Taking practice tests every day in the final week
  • Having a study buddy to quiz with
  • Reading Discover Canada at least twice
  • What didn't help:

  • Cramming the night before
  • Worrying about obscure facts
  • Reading unofficial study materials instead of the actual guide
  • Arriving at the Test Centre

Test centres are typically IRCC offices in government buildings. They're functional, not fancy. Expect:

  • A check-in area where they verify your ID
  • A waiting area (sometimes you'll wait 15–30 minutes)
  • A test room with desks/computers
  • Tip: Arrive early. Being rushed increases stress.

    The Test Itself

    The most common reactions:

  • "It was shorter than I expected" — 20 questions goes quickly
  • "Some questions were tricky" — especially ones about specific dates or government roles
  • "I knew most of the answers" — if you studied, you'll recognise the material
  • "I finished with time to spare" — 30 minutes is generous for 20 questions
  • After the Test

Results are usually available the same day. The feeling of passing is described as:

  • Relief (it's over!)
  • Pride (I did it!)
  • Excitement (ceremony is next!)
  • Advice from People Who Passed

  • "Study for at least 2 weeks"
  • "Take practice tests — they're the best preparation"
  • "Don't overthink the questions. Most are straightforward"
  • "Focus on history and government — they're the biggest sections"
  • "The test isn't as hard as you think if you prepare"
