Pre-Confederation Timeline

  • ~1000 CE: Vikings (Norse) from Iceland briefly settled in Newfoundland (L'Anse aux Meadows)
  • 1497: John Cabot reached the Atlantic coast, claimed land for England
  • 1534: Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence, claimed land for France
  • 1604–1608: French colonies founded — Port-Royal (1604), Quebec City (1608)
  • 1670: Hudson's Bay Company founded — oldest commercial company in Canada
  • 1759: Battle of the Plains of Abraham — British defeated French, capturing Quebec
  • 1763: Treaty of Paris — France ceded New France to Britain
  • 1774: Quebec Act — protected French language, Catholic faith, and civil law
  • 1776: Loyalists fled the American Revolution to Canada
  • 1812–1815: War of 1812 — Canada repelled American invasions
  • Confederation and After

  • 1867: British North America Act — Confederation of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia
  • 1869: Red River Resistance — Louis Riel led Métis in Manitoba
  • 1870: Manitoba became a province
  • 1871: British Columbia joined Confederation
  • 1873: PEI joined Confederation
  • 1885: Canadian Pacific Railway completed (coast to coast)
  • 1885: Northwest Resistance — Louis Riel was convicted and executed
  • 1896–1905: Massive immigration to the West
  • 1905: Saskatchewan and Alberta became provinces
  • 1914–1918: World War I — Vimy Ridge (1917) was a defining moment
  • 1939–1945: World War II — Canada fought at Juno Beach on D-Day (1944)
  • 1949: Newfoundland joined Confederation (last province)

  • 1965: New Canadian flag adopted (maple leaf)
  • 1969: Official Languages Act
  • 1982: Constitution Act — brought the Constitution to Canada, added the Charter
